  15. Impasse at Jalalabad

  17. <p>    Despite repeated furious attacks, mujahedin rebels were no
  18. closer to capturing the city of Jalalabad last week. They
  19. seemed to be suffering from disorganization as well as an
  20. inability to pull off major assaults. In one battle last week,
  21. rebel artillery pounded the Soviet-backed government's positions
  22. at the city's airport for hours at a time, but the several
  23. hundred guerrillas who mustered to rush the defenses never got
  24. going -- the attack bogged down under return fire and arguments
  25. within their own ranks over how to attack across several hundred
  26. yards of open ground.

  28. <p>    When tanks and MiG aircraft zeroed in on their positions,
  29. the rebels fell back, taking an alarming number of casualties
  30. along the way. Reviewing the failed encounter, a frustrated
  31. Rahim Wardak, the battlefront commander of the National Islamic
  32. Front for Afghanistan, concluded that the battle that began more
  33. than three weeks ago "is turning into a stalemate."
